“Admit it. We all have scars that we’ve been concealing. Scars that kept us from doing what we’ve always wanted to do with our lives. There are the physical scars that kept us from wearing that beautiful, supposedly flattering dress. There are the pimple scars that need tons of concealers, the kind of scars your crush cannot and should not see. And there are the emotional scars that we’re trying to mask because we don’t want the world to see our weaknesses. Whatever our life stories are, we all have scars we’re too embarrassed to show the world.

But scarred people are beautiful. Scars make us human. Scars make us beautifully flawed. Scars make our stories. Scars make us real.

So why feel embarrassed? Why keep it? No one’s made…”

Jamboree, an event run by Ray Box and the Sport Compact Group, has been the premier event, if not the only event for Australian sport compact drag racing for over 20 years. Being held inaugurally in Queensland at Willowbank Dragway and holding a special place in the hearts of those who have raced there since the very beginning, it has since expanded to Sydney as the sister event to the home event in Brisbane. Formally known as Compak Attack, the 9th running of the event was recently held at Sydney Dragway at the heart of Western Sydney, where Team Cars For Hope headed to capture the fierce and fast world that is drag racing. This would be the lead up to the main event in September, where a multitude of teams will descend upon for a chance to snap up the holy grail of rotary and turbo drag racing in Australia. The one day event for Sydney was backed by sunny skies and high temperatures that made for a very sticky track and ensured tight competition between the 170 competitors. The various categories were diverse in cars and power and included Factory Xtreme, Pro Turbo, Pro Compact, Modified 10.5, Extreme, Modified Compact, Pro 289, Street 289, All Motor and Street Compact classes. There was some unforgettable action that unfolded on the quarter mile for Jamboree Sydney 2012.

Arguably the leaders of the rotary scene in Sydney, Pac Racing, were back again this year with their famously fast 20B MX-6 in the Factory Xtreme class, which would be it’s last outing before being placed back into retirement to make way for their newer and more powerful car.

The MX-6, which has lately faced some stiff competition with higher power figures, was struggling with the increase in power that PAC had fed into it prior to Jamboree and lost to Joe Signorelli’s Gas Motorsport Celica in round 3 of eliminations.

Nothing beats the big boys of Factory Xtreme, where half track burnouts are the norm. Joe Signorelli’s are one of the best we’ve seen. The high-pitched turbo spooling and the cloud of tyre smoke that follows is something that can only be experienced in person.

The finals consisted of the big guns Signorelli vs Harvey. Both were on par at the 60ft mark, but Harvey pulled away in the closing metres, stopping the clock at 6.421 at 221mph against Signorelli’s 6.623 at 215mph.

A 2JZ in an M3 BMW is not something you see everyday. Such uniqueness in the engine and chassis pairings is one of the many aspects of sport compact drag racing that brings fans back year after year.

The cars in Pro Turbo represent the general shape of a specific vehicle but often with a complex custom tube frame chassis in place of the original manufacturer’s. Michael Baghdadi’s S15 Silvia looks vastly different from what you can purchase at a Nissan dealer, such as a gaping hole in the front to feed air to the massive turbo underneath, among other outlandish modifications all in the quest for speed.

Although there were mainly older generation rotaries competing in Jamboree, there were a healthy showing of the newer generation as well, competing in Pro Turbo…

…such as Daniel Swanney’s ‘SIR20B’ RX-7, who traveled down from Queensland for Jamboree Sydney. Swanney had a bad start to qualifying but ended qualifying in 3rd on a 7.728, however lost to the eventual winner, Rob Novak in his 4G63 Datsun 1200, in the semi-finals.

This FD RX-7 was driven by Kiwi Gina Bullians, one of the first females we’ve seen driving a drag car and the only female in this years field, who came runner up in the Pro Turbo class.

30ft wheelies are quite common in Modified 10.5, where enormous power is mated with a comparably lighter weight and smaller wheelbase, as teams attempt to put the power to the track without lighting up the rubber in the process.

The class not only caters for rotaries and 4s, but also V8s, which were plentiful throughout Modified 10.5, mixing it up with the smaller displacements. Joe Gauci’s Cortina uses a twin turbo setup as seen through the front grille, unlike the conventional supercharger setup often associated with V8s.

Daniel Stoldatic’s ‘Pro 100′ Mazda R100 might be small, but packs a punch with it’s 13BT rotor. However, this wasn’t enough in eliminations, with a 8.266 against Joe Gauci’s 7.398 pass in the Cortina. Gauci went on to beat Shane Crichton’s Toyota Cressida in the finals and sealing the win with a 7.416 at 198mph.

Especially for the V8 fans was the Extreme class, with many cars that you wouldn’t expect to find at an event dominated by rotors. Adrian Santoro’s XW Falcon had nice launches, though just couldn’t cut it running high 9s when the rest of the field was running 7s and even 6s.

The same could not be said for Ali Rayan’s Torana, who couldn’t just get the power down during this qualifying run. The Extreme trophy was taken home by Peter Papas in the LX Torana against Steve Petrovski.

Lining up before the obligatory burnout and staging process is the calm before the storm. It’s where drivers have that last chance to run through the procedure in their minds, such as remembering the shift points and the location of the parachute release, and where the team simultaneously checks tyre pressures and wheelie-bar settings in the final minutes.

The moment when the car starts for the burnout is just as nerve-wrecking for the team as it is for the driver. Failure at this stage means the run is forfeited if everything doesn’t go to plan. Mark Tischendorf’s Mazda 323 successfully fires up ready to smoke it up.

The wheelie-bar forms a vital part of a drag car, helping to keep the rear tyres loaded to prevent loss of traction on launch…

…but sometimes the launches get a little out of hand.

And sometimes crazy launches complemented some pretty crazy results. Ben Palmer’s RX-3 took out Modified Compact with a 9.329 at 149mph after qualifying in 2nd place.

Insanely low pressures in the super soft compound rear tyres means tonnes of deformation in the tyre carcass during the launch, all in an effort to get the most grip when it counts the most.

It also means tonnes of tyre smoke that the spectators love to see, especially in Modified Compact! Fred Karam rips a mega skid in his short-wheelbased Mazda 323.

Damien McKern’s Pac Performance RX-2 ran consistently high 7s all day, with brutal crackling launches. Here you can see the chalk left by the wheelie bar, which is used as data to analyse the launch characteristics of the car for the eliminations. McKern qualified in the top position, however was not in round 2 due to a punctured front tyre.

The Gas Motorsport Supra driven by Po Tung in Street 289 was pulling consistently high quality burnouts and low 8 second runs. That super-long wheelie-bar was definitely needed to keep things sensible upon launch.

The Street 289 class was won by Ray Fairfull, beating cars much smaller and lighter than his Ford Falcon. Tim Burg qualified low in 9th place and lost to Robert Ciampi in the first round of eliminations, despite the high hopes for his classic Mazda 808.

Although non-turbo, the All Motor class was one to watch out for. They might not win in terms of outright power, but what they lack in power they make up in light weight and rawness.

It was definitely fun to watch Joseph Di Giorgio’s EG Civic as he revved the guts out of the H22A down the track, but was knocked out early in the day.

Henry Spicak’s VW Beetle was good enough to get him to the finals, however, could only manage a runner up position against Roy Yaghi’s RX-3.

The Street Compact class features street registered rides from across Sydney and Australia. These Cressida’s are good for 11s, not bad for a street driven sedan.

It was good to watch the range of less powerful, but still exciting cars battling it out hard with each other, creating some close battles separated by only fractions of a second.

R35 GT-Rs were never really intended for drag strip use, but it’s okay to stretch it’s legs once in a while, isn’t it?

Equally interesting is this 13B Cortina, which would definitely create a fuss between both the rotary fans and the Ford fans.

The pits was where spectators could go to when the track action got a little repetitive. Here you could find the teams hard at work preparing for the next battle as well as cars that had arrived straight from their runs…

…including this Street Compact classed CRX with fats up front and a menacing turbo peeking through the front bar…

…to this pink RX-3 named ‘ILBUZU’, that you won’t often find on the streets.

Queenslander Travis Beckman’s green machine CA18-powered Datsun 1200 was so well prepared that it wouldn’t be out of place at the show and shine let alone the drag strip!

It’s great to see the trek that competitors make to Sydney Jamboree even with Willowbank Dragway on their doorstep!

Anthony Maatouk’s ‘VLGOD’ VL Commodore clearly demonstrates that he means business with the awesome burnouts he pulls down the track. Rightly so, Anthony was crowned with the biggest burnouts of this year’s event.

Looks can be deceiving, as Andrew Stavrou’s 10 second Escort proves.

One of our favourites of the day was this immaculate KE10 Corolla driven by Lee Crow. It was amazing to see his 8 second passes, especially for such an old car outputting so much power.

Standing next to rotors and feeling them cracking on the rev-limiter at over 10,000rpm is definitely an experience, as we left Jamboree happily with smoke in our lungs, chunks of rubber on our shirts and buzzing in our ears after being the only ones without ear protection!

We’re ready for Jamboree Sydney 2013…

I’ve personally known Brandon since the 7th grade. We actually went to high school together for that matter. But as many have experienced in their lifetime, things happen, people move away and sometimes you just lose contact with your friends and family. My stark memory of Brandon was that he was a Rugby League player and had very little interest in cars if any at all.

After a half decade without speaking we finally crossed paths early in 2011 at a Circuit Club track day at Eastern Creek Raceway. I was quite surprised to see him strapped into a K24 powered DC2R at his first track day and even more surprised when he had told me he had just learnt how to drive manual. He wasn’t breaking any records that day but it was great to see him out there having a go.

Eventually he had caught the track bug and the modifications began to flow. Basic modifications such as upgraded coilovers, suspension bushings, lightweight wheels, tyres and brakes were thrown at the car in very little time. As Brandon began to build up on his track experience and develop his driving technique he felt the need for something more, something different and for a street car it was something very different.

Forced induction via a Rotrex C38-61 supercharger was Brandon’s preferred option for the standard K20/K24 Frankenstein. In the words of Brandon himself “I prefer the power delivery of the supercharged setup coming from a N/A background, over a turbo setup, and believe its more suitable for time attack racing especially after seeing great results in the USA and BYP Racing & Developments right here in Sydney.”

As the 2011 season progressed the car became more serious with additions to aero and gearing and by the end of the season the standard engine finally let go. “Looking at the car that day with its flared guards, 17×10” rims, custom front splitter and an APR wing, it hit me how far its come from the DC2R I once drove to work every day with. I decided to cancel the rego and strip the car down and begin the rebuild for the 2012 season,” Brandon said. Before being stripped down the car stopped the clocks at 1.03.2 at Wakefield Park and 1.40.2 at Eastern Creek and was the winner of the 2011 Honda Nationals. Rocket fast times.

Sponsors of the car, BYP Racing & Developments have carried out most of the modifications to it to this point and will continue to back the car until it’s completion. A recent visit to the workshop revealed the progress of the build thus far, and a dramatic change could be seen upon first glance.

Without the front bumper on it is easy to see how aggressive the set of 17×10″ Enkei RPF1′s wrapped in 255/40/17 Advan A050′s were, which stunned the Honda scene as it rolled off the trailer at the 2011 Honda Nationals.

A closer look at what it takes to fit 17×10″ rims on a Honda Integra reveals the excessive amount of flaring and custom fabrication that is required. Also note the drilled holes on the door hinges to save those important grams.

Taken from the J’s Racing Australia DC5R which raced only once at the 2010 World Time Attack Challenge are these huge 6 pot calipers which will surely help Brandon pull up his DC2R.

While the final engine is being pieced together a dummy K24A was dropped in to acquire the correct measurements of piping for the intercooler and supercharger. Pictured is the Xcessive intake manifold, popular in the US for high boost and nitrous applications which will be bolted onto the final engine. It features much larger runners in comparison to OEM intake manifolds and increased plenum volume.

The Rotrex C38-61 is set to be replaced with a C38-91 supercharger. The Rotrex C38-91 is the “big boy” C38 with an impeller wheel designed for better overall efficiency. Rotrex believes the unit is capable of producing up to 650hp on a 2.4L engine.

A huge custom intercooler whipped up by ALL IN Fabrication will hopefully overcome the previous overheating issues the car experienced at Eastern Creek Raceway.

These gold Hasport EGK1 solid mounts will hold the Frankenstein motor in place and will guarantee Brandon a free back massage when driving.

A look at the undercarriage of the DC2R shows that it means serious business. Jimmy at BYP fabricated a custom 3.5” mild steel exhaust running straight down the centre and through the boot where the spare tyre would usually be positioned. This increases the amount of flow as well as reduces weight, but also allows enough room to run an effective rear diffuser. To complement the high output engine in the suspension department are a set of top of the line Tein Super Racing Spec coilovers paired with an ASR 32mm sway bar and spherical bearing Function 7 lower control arms.

Here you can see that the interior has been resprayed grey and the exhaust running through the boot. The two holes on the right behind the fuel pump are where the rear seatbelts used to be mounted. This is one of many parts of the interior which have been cut out to save further weight.

The guys at BYP believe weight reduction will play a big part in the success of the car, however in terms of safety a 6 point chromoly roll cage was fabricated by Mr Enforcer to keep weight down to a minimum but also to ensure the car will pass CAMS regulations.

A suede NRG steering wheel replaces the bulky OEM Momo wheel fitted with airbags.

Being transformed into a full blown time attack racer the car only requires just enough fuel for a few warm up laps and a flying lap. A 10L JAZ fuel tank is mounted at the front passenger side to save weight but also to transfer weight to the front of the car which will increase traction for a FWD vehicle.

This is how the car currently sits. The guys at BYP are working around the clock to complete the car as soon as possible. We’ll be visiting them soon to give you a further updates on the build.

8am was the start of the day for Team Cars For Hope on the last day of March as we were all set for Jamboree Sydney at Sydney Dragway, however by 3pm after our shirts were covered in a nice film of black carbon and rubber residue we left for our ITR for the popular JDMST EOMM. With our camera gear and stickers all packed and ready for the meet we jumped into the car, put the keys into the ignition and turned the barrel, but with a resounding whir of the starter motor, it didn’t start. Without a charged battery, the trek out to the EOMM looked dire. So we quickly found a replacement that was lying around, installed it and we were successfully off to Wholesale Suspension in Penrith for the meet together with the rest of Team Cars For Hope following closely behind.

Upon arrival we started to see hundreds of cars parked on the sides of the road and in the infields of grass surrounding Wholesale Suspension. This was the driveway to where we were greeted with more cars and many many people.

We had made it!

I’ve always had a soft spot for the Toyota MR2 even though I’ve never driven one. I’d be extra keen to take one for a spin around the track sometime. This one looked mighty fine with a set of SSR SP1s.

There are some interesting stickers around these days, especially concerning the growing stance movement. I quite like this one: Hellabroke, ballin’ on a budget, as featured on the SW20 MR2.

Hearing of an AE86 sitting alone in a field isn’t usually a good thing, especially in Japan, but in Australia it’s often the contrary – here’s a very nicely presented Levin for other JDM enthusiasts to peek at.

I see hundreds and hundreds of modified cars on an everyday basis but if my memory serves me right I’ve seen this very red MX5 pushing very hard around Wakefield Park at a Circuit Club track day. Sometimes a little too hard and running wide into the dirt at turns 4 and 5…

Here’s a closer look at the wheel fitment on the red MX5 and the rolling and flaring of the rear guards to fit the Work Equips nicely.

I am a HUGE fan of the Honda S2000. This one looked ultra neat dropped on a set of Work Emotion CR Kais. With plans for the CFH ITR to be stripped out and turned into a full track car we’ve been looking at other alternatives for a new project lately. Let’s just say the Honda S2000 is very high up on our list, but we’ll save that for another post.

We’ve seen this EK Civic at a previous ClubITR meet rolling on steelies. I asked Tony what was the go with that and he replied, “Oh my BBS rims are being rebarelled.” Well now that they’ve been done I think they look pretty rad!

Low enough for Sydney’s notorious streets? You won’t find any airbags hiding in those arches!

I’ve never seen a Toyota Corona Mk2 in person before. It looked great with a few goodies hidden behind the grille. Maybe the more awesome SU-222 plates gives away a few more hints.

Cars For Hope stickers are starting to appear more and more on the streets and it puts a smile on our faces to see us car enthusiasts getting our message of hope out there.

Some more stickers, a whole lot more, sticker bombing a large portion of the front guard on this 180SX!

The ‘AGR-O63′ EH Wagon attracted attention right when it was about to leave!

A 2JZ under the hood is an unexpected engine conversion, but a great match even for a car that’s approaching 50 years old.

Another Australian classic, this time in the form of an XK Falcon. We’ve seen this pop up a few times at recent EOMMs…

…but this time, sporting different wheels compared to last time we spotted it at the EOYM a few months back!

It seemed like MX5 central at this month’s EOMM!

It was evidently also S15 central, with Van’s nicely styled Silvia sitting on some CE28Ns and featuring a changed front bar.

Team S15 was being displayed as more owners wanted to show their cars on Wholesale Suspension’s floor for their little bit of limelight. They really do look like a team with the same front bars on their cars!

An old Holden HQ Premier perched above a lone S15. It’s not often you’ll see a combination like this at a JDMST EOMM!

MX5 with some nice track-inspired additions of a carbon fibre bonnet and a front lip to name a few.

Quite surprisingly and unfortunately, it’s not often that FD RX7s are seen on the streets of Sydney anymore, but at JDMST meets we can feast our eyes on these engineering marvels, such as this one subtly modified with a set of Enkei RPF1s.

This AE86 that looked like it just came from the drifts sure turned heads and got our Matt grinning from ear to ear! It’s great to see the slightly older generation of JDM cars coming along to the EOMMs.

Not as old but still a classic was this mint R32. An orgasm to the eyes.

This FD2 Civic was sitting on a nice set of BBSs, but come home time, had trouble finding it’s way out of the driveway that regular cars wouldn’t even bat an eyelid with.

Even as the sun set, the afternoon slowly turned to night and people began to trickle out from the EOMM, there were a dedicated few who stayed and continued to converse with other members, as well as bringing their cars in to the workshop to display. This was a simplistic KE70 that caught our attention, proving that you don’t need all the bells and whistles to have a fun, or even a decent looking car for that matter. A big thanks to Wholesale Suspension for hosting the meet; it’s places like this that really make attending EOMMs a great experience.

Here’s a snapshot of team member Dale Ritchie and his Kawasaki 650R Ninja. He’s been with us since the establishment of the organisation and takes care of the Information Technology aspects of operating Cars For Hope. While he also owns a Mazda 6 MPS you would often see him commuting to work on his motorbike and in his spare time enjoying long rides through Australia’s better roads.

Everyone in the team has the same motivation to drive towards the mission of raising awareness about depression and Dale is no different. What’s different is our story before the organisation’s existence. Our experiences, knowledge and opinions. What drives us to volunteer our time and effort to make Cars For Hope possible.

Dale’s story and more info on his bike will be published at a later date so keep an eye on the website.

With hope,

Last Sunday on February 26th was the first ClubITR BBQ of the year held down at Zen Garage in Leichhardt. Team Cars For Hope decided to make our way down their after the ClubITR x Cars For Hope BBQ at Lane Cove National Park last November. Arriving at Zen Garage, we saw the usual forum members already catching up and conversing about their ITRs and Hondas. Unlike November’s BBQ, however, this one seemed to have a more relaxed attitude with fewer cars and members in attendance. Though this didn’t mean there was a shortage in the quality of the cars at the meet with cars weren’t limited to ITRs – a range of Civics, and even an Evo and a Lotus also joined in the BBQ.

Zen Garage proved to be the perfect setting for this month’s BBQ, with a relaxed atmosphere and ample parking space for cars to park as well as for forum members to socialise.

The Cars For Hope ITR was in a white sandwich between 2 EP3 Type Rs of which there were quite a few, just outside Zen Garage. When the spaces outside were exhausted, cars began to spill out on to the street.

It’s been a while since we’ve caught up with the members of ClubITR, however we were very excited to see everyone again!

This red EG looks mild to the eye sitting on a set of RPF1s, but on closer inspection was a race-inspired, fully gutted interior complete with carbon fibre bonnet to lighten what already is a very light car.

Though not all of the cars arriving at the BBQ were of a circuit guise, such as this DC2 ITR running a stock-looking exterior.

It was difficult to divert our eyes away from the fabulously presented DC5′s in the sea of Hondas.

This DC5S proves how only some simple exterior modifications can really change the presence of a car…

..such as a set of Enkei RPF1s which seem to be a popular choice on Hondas of all shapes and sizes.

Siting inside Zen Garage was Prash’s DC5 sporting a similar treatment of some wheels, a subtle lip kit and a lower to really set it off. Berty has driven it around Wakefield Park and stresses that it isn’t all show for this DC5!

A set of Work Emotion 11Rs and a rear tow hook add that subtle race-style touch, complimented by a ride height that won’t leave the undercarriage behind on Sydney’s notorious roads.

It was great to see it and many other cars on the day representing Cars For Hope with one of our stickers on the rear quarter window.

But tucked away in a corner away from the gaze of the public was Justin Fox’s DC2R acquired from ex-Autosalon Magazine art director Michael ‘Papz’ Papandrea.

If being surrounded by Hondas was too much, the GT5 simulator was waiting for challengers to see who could lap Tsukuba the fastest…in a Honda no less.

But Berty had other ideas on how to drive GT5, adopting a ‘fully-sick’ gangster driving position.

Or one could simply venture outside to be greeted by John’s Exige, but you can never really be away from a Honda at a ClubITR BBQ, with a K24 lying under the bonnet of this beast.

A big thanks for Trevor Wu and Felix Alim from ClubITR for organising the event, Justin Fox from Zen Garage for hosting it and our Richy for cooking some great snags on the BBQ! We definitely cannot wait for the next one!

“I believe that depression is a serious issue and not many people really understand what it is. People need to be educated about depression so that they can see the signs in friends or family and take action. The majority of people suffering depression don’t seek treatment or speak about it, so by educating people we can assist those who are suffering from this illness.” – Adrian Lee

Shuichi Shigeno may not be a name that is instantly recognisable, but chances are you may have seen his creations in one form or another. Most famous is his Initial D manga series, which has taken the world by storm over the past 15 years. It has seen itself be turned into a popular anime series and even a blockbuster movie and has dramatically accelerated Toyota’s AE86 Sprinter into cult status, with the name Takumi taking on an entirely different meaning since.

The owner of this AE86 is Adrian Lee, who gets to live every Initial D fan’s dream on a daily basis. However, his interest in the AE86 was not actually sparked by Initial D; “I had a family friend who introduced me to the AE86. He would show me all of his Best Motoring and Option DVDs and it amazed me how it moved around the racetrack and was able to overtake cars which had much more power.” It was at this point that he began an obsession that has continued to this day.

Before purchasing this particular model, Adrian owned a bone stock ADM Levin hatch complete with 4AC single-cam, single carburettor engine. Ben Cheong, Adrian’s mechanic of BEL Garage, Touge Tune and now Ixa, had owned this Trueno for 7 years, gaining fame under the number plate ‘Takumi’, building it into what you see before you. Knowing the time and effort that Ben had put into it with his heart and soul, Adrian accepted what Ben entrusted him with. Since then, he has left the car in almost the same state as it was given to him. As Ben had already modified a healthy portion of it, he felt no need to change anything; “I actually had parts taken off the car as I was a poor university student,” as Adrian mesmerises the time he first took ownership of the car.

The most notable feature of the car is the eye-catching panda design from the original GT Apex model that is a must for any replica of the Fujiwara Sprinter. Taking further inspiration from the Project D era of Takumi’s AE86 is the Varis carbon fibre bonnet, which not only completes the look, but also provides a considerable weight reduction compared to the OEM item. But the finishing touch to a worthy Initial D replica comes down to the ‘Fujiwara Tofu Den’ or ‘Fujiwara Tofu Shop’ decal, which Ben had researched extensively by finding the exact font before having the decal cut to the exact size and even going as far as to measuring the placement of the logo to ensure accuracy quite literally down to the millimeter.

Filling the guards of Adrian’s Sprinter are genuine RS Watanabe wheels measuring 14×7 inches in the front and 14×7.5 inches in the rear. A staggered wheel setup, borrowed from circuit racers who have used this technique for countless years, lessens the oversteer characteristics often found in light, short-wheelbase rear-wheel drive cars. Complementing the wheel choice is the popular Mazda FC-3S RX-7 brake conversion often undertaken by Sprinter enthusiasts as it offers the braking needs for a tuned Sprinters and extending the braking capabilities from the uninspiring drum brakes in the rear of the ADM model.

Here would be where the engine specs would be, but Adrian was as tight-lipped as Bunta when we asked him about the engine department. We weren’t even allowed to look ourselves, for what lies in the engine bay remains a secret only known to the owner Adrian and his tuner Ben, though it seemed like a heavily-worked 4AGE of some sort judging by the sound from the GP Sports exhaust taking care of the engine gasses at the rear.

The interior plays host to some personal additions to the car, including the JDM AE86 tissue box holder which even has tissues straight from Japan. Avid Sprinter fans will notice the original and uncracked black dash, taken from the GT Apex model, as well as a host of Defi gauges lying in the air vents to provide information including water temperature, oil temperature and oil pressure to Adrian.

These spots have proven popular for placing gauges, however, Adrian has taken this a step further with custom moulds in which the gauges sit. These point the gauges towards the driver as this part of the dash actually points away from the driver’s face.

Initial D fanatics will also notice the tachometer, which reads to 11,000RPM just like Takumi’s car. But Adrian keeps his cool with the throttle to keep people on the street unaware of the potential of his Sprinter. To help keep the secrets of the car under wraps, hidden away from prying eyes is a Haltech G8 ECU residing in the glovebox, the brains of the mystery engine that lies within the engine bay.

A Sparco Rev bucket seat keeps Adrian from sliding around under lateral load as well as keeping the centre of gravity of the car as low as possible for superior handling. A TRD shift knob ensures a perfect throw for quick gear changes, while a TRD steering wheel with a Momo hub keeps everything under control in the steering department.

Owning such an AE86 has had it’s benefits. “As corny as it may sound, it is true that every time I jump in the car and go for a drive it always brings a smile to my face. There’s no fancy electronics assisting you with this and that, it’s raw, just you and the car.” When asked what is in store for the future of the Sprinter, Adrian replies; “I want to get the car engineered but I just need to install a few more things beforehand. I also want to start taking it to the track to learn how to drive it better.” Adrian also plans to keep this Sprinter for a long time, as he says it has become part of the family. We hope that Adrian’s love for the AE86 continues and grows with this car to become one just as Takumi has.

“I have the utmost respect for Cars For Hope because not many people take big action like you guys have. Most people shy away from the topic of depression and think there’s nothing they can do about it, but even doing something small is better than doing nothing at all…and seeing Cars For Hope doing this; it takes great courage and commitment to do so.” – Adrian Lee

Last Thursday on December 29 was JDM Style Tuning’s monthly EOMM meet. At a small carpark just off Foreshore Road in Mascot, it was the standard monthly meet with a few enthusiasts, their mates and their cars together to meet new people and enjoy Sydney’s car culture. As my first ever JDMST EOMM, I was so surprised to see how many people of many other different modifying styles in attendance. It was refreshing to see and meet people from across Sydney (and even interstate in some cases), congregate in one location to enjoy our scene.

We arrived to an already crowded carpark with a healthy dose of S15 Silvias in attendance…

…many with simple and clean street styling kept in mind. This is Van’s NA S15 sitting flush on some CE28Ns along with other subtle body additions.

Not only were there S15s, but Mitsubishi fans could celebrate over the amount of Evos represented at this month’s meet, including this ‘illest’ yellow Evo 9 showing the owner’s love of JDMST with some matching yellow stencilling on the tyres!

Beside the entrance were a few Bosozoku-flavoured cars, including the white Mk2 from All Japan Day back in November.

I’m not sure if ‘Baka’ (meaning ‘idiot’ in Japanese) is the right way to put it, because the simplicity of those SSR Mk1s on this Cedric has definitely worked in this case!

The stance movement has proven to be a great new addition to Sydney’s car scene, such as this EG Civic. It incorporated form and race together, with a stripped interior and roll cage hiding inside.

One of my favourites from the meet, a matte black S15 sat behind another Evo. It turned out to be a crowd favourite as well!

I was drawn to this AE90 Corolla with the drift trike on the roof. These things can usually be seen shredding around EOMMs, but I’m not sure if it could compete with the 20V laying in the front of the Corolla!

And an XK Falcon for all the classic muscle car fans out there.

Du’s green EK Civic incorporates subtle styling for that Cali feel.

Here’s a VL Turbo Calais often found roaming the streets of Sydney, with Simmons Wheels and a front-mount intercooler peeking through the front bar.

However, the meet did not go exactly to plan, as the Police arrived shortly into the night and everybody began to file out accordingly. Hopefully the next EOMM won’t have the intervention that this one did and we can start 2012 by seeing some new cars and new faces!
